Enhanced production of cell-bound and extracellular streptolysin S by hemolytic streptococci pretreated with proteases.
The amount of streptolysin S produced by resting streptococci was considerably increased after incubation of the washed bacteria with trypsin or pronase. Production of both cell-bound and free forms of the toxin was enhanced by the protease treatment. By addition of trypsin, streptolysin S yield was considerably increased in growing culture as well. Treatment with lysozyme was ineffective, and ...
متن کاملLegionella bozemanii antigens
The immune response to individual major antigens of Legionella bozeman'i was studied in 67 sera from 26 inpatients with febrile disease using immunoblotting techniques. All the patients had fever of unknown origin and showed strong serological reactions to L bozemanii that cross-reacted with Rickettsia typhi, as determined by a standard indirect microimmunofluorescence assay. Sera analysed by w...
متن کاملOptimization of Extracellular Cellulase Production by Trichoderma harzianum
ABSTRACT Background and Objectives: Cellulose is a major component of plant biomass, which can be converted into biofuels and valuable chemicals. The key step in utilization of this organic material is its hydrolysis into soluble sugars. This study evaluated cellulase production by Trichoderma harzianum under different pH values, temperatures and incubation...
متن کاملNutritional aspects of cytotoxin production by Clostridium difficile.
Arginine was the only amino acid used by Clostridium difficile that permitted cytotoxin synthesis in a peptone-based medium. Synthesis of cytotoxin was delayed when glucose was used as the substrate. Addition of rifampin or puromycin to cultures prior to release of cytotoxin inhibited the release of cytotoxin, suggesting that a protein essential for cytotoxin release is synthesized after cytoto...
متن کاملLack of Shiga-like cytotoxin production by enteroinvasive Escherichia coli.
Enteroinvasive Escherichia coli has not been extensively studied for cytotoxin production. We evaluated 30 well-characterized enteroinvasive E. coli strains of all the known invasive serogroups from several geographic regions for their ability to produce Shiga-like cytotoxic activity assayed in a HeLa cell system. None of these strains produced cytotoxic activity that was neutralizable with ant...
